Importing a vehicle from the outside of Rwanda is not an easy task. It is necessary to have experience and above all, to know the regulation that governs the import of vehicles in Rwanda.

Things you need to know

You have to learn how to buy a vehicle and you can do it either through knowledge that is outside Rwanda or through a well-oiled network. You can also research on the Internet and this is a method that is very practical today, with lot of facilities that come with it. Some companies specialized in online cars sales make it easy for you to transport the car to Rwanda.

Whichever method you choose, you should favor vehicles with left-hand steering i.e. those that facilitate left-hand drive. Vehicles manufactured for right-hand drive are not permitted since the 2009 Import Law in Rwanda. Before purchasing and importing a vehicle, rest assured that it is in good condition through the images that are offered.

Transportation to Rwanda

Since Rwanda is a landlocked country, importers are obliged to go through ports such as Dar es Salaam in Tanzania or Mombasa in Kenya. The customs office of the host country will be responsible for all checks and then you can safely transport your vehicle to Rwanda in a couple of days.

It takes at least 5 days to reach Kigali via Uganda. If you hire a driver, you will have to put up a consistent $ 500 for the trip.

The various taxes to pay

When you select your vehicle, take the time to check that you have enough money to pay the different applicable taxes. You will have to pay all taxes and insurance to register your vehicle, because unregistered vehicles will not be able to circulate in Rwanda. Customs and other taxes are calculated based on engine power, seating capacity and year of manufacture.
